USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service has announced that the Fall 2013 meeting of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) will take place from October 22-24 in Louisville, KY.  The NOSB meets twice annually to receive input from the public and key stakeholders in the organic community on NOSB recommendations and discussion items.  October’s meeting will cover a range of issues including possible changes to the List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) and updates from working groups on technical issues.

I saw a post from OFRF this week that the government shutdown could cause this coming NOSB meeting to be cancelled. If you are planning on attending, follow closely to see if you need to cancel any reservations for travel/lodging.

The Fall 2013 meeting of the NOSB was, indeed, cancelled due to the government shutdown.

We have a rare opportunity next spring - the next NOSB meeting will be held in San Antonio, TX in April 2014. If you have ever wondered how this process works, the meeting is open to the public. If there is an issue of interest to you, there will be opportunities for public comment - whether on a specific agenda item, or of a more general nature.

If you are interested in the organic standards, I recommend that you attend part or all of the NOSB meeting. See how the process works, and how you can participate.
