Land Planning for Drought Mitigation

All workshops will be held at the Bear Creek Ranch, Aledo, TX

As ranchers, we can't control how much rain we get -but we can do the next best thing - which is to mitigate the results of drought through smart ranch management and holistic grazing practices. Successful ranch management can mean the difference between profitability and failure. HMI understands the issues ranchers in Texas are currently facing, and we've partnered with the Dixon Water Foundation,  Dr. Richard Teague, Walt Davis, Betsy Ross and Steve Nelle to create a series of workshops to help farmers and ranchers manage through this ongoing crisis.

This workshop series is designed to provide a comprehensive education about drought and how to manage before, during and after a drought. In order to be best prepared to manage for drought, we strongly encourage you attend all 3 workshops. By attending all three workshops, you'll save $33 in registration fees, strengthen your future operational capacity and have access to more professionals with years of experience.  At the series, you'll learn...
  • How practicing Holistic Management leads to better decision-making and more effective planning skills during a crisis
  • How the water cycle functions and how you can improve the water-holding capacity of your soil
  • How to use grazing and animal impact to strengthen soil and facilitate faster recovery of forage when the rain returns
  • How to create infrastructure and strategies for creating forage and financial reserves as well as biodiversity
  • When and how to destock
  • How to manage after the drought
register The registration fee is $40.00 per person, per workshop (includes lunch). The complete series of three workshop is  $87.00 per person if purchased at one time - in advance.

On-line registration closes the day before each workshop starts. You may register on site, but advance registration is encouraged due to limited seating capacity.

Speakers for the series include:

  • Peggy Sechrist, Holistic Management Certified Educator and HMI Program Advisor
  • Dr. Richard Teague, Associate Director and Professor, Sustainable Rangeland Management Program, Texas A&M AgriLife Research
  • Walt Davis, Rancher, consultant and author of How to Not go Broke Ranching
  • Betsy Ross, Certified Soil Foodweb Advisor and CEO, Sustainable Growth Texas, LLC and Partner in 'Betsy Ross Grass-fed Beef'
